Cable versus dumbbell lateral raises
The implements create different resistance profiles. A dumbbell's external torque is small when the arm hangs close to the body and rises as the arm moves outward. A cable can load more of the early range depending on pulley position. That mechanical difference does not automatically make one superior.
Current long-term evidence
A within-participant training study in resistance-trained lifters found that both cable and dumbbell lateral raises increased lateral-deltoid muscle thickness, with no clear difference between conditions. This supports choosing the implement you can perform and progress consistently.
Reps and progression
A practical 10 to 25 repetition range can make small loads and controlled technique easier to manage, but it is not a universal hypertrophy zone. Use the same cable station and pulley height. Add repetitions with similar range and RIR, then make the smallest available load increase. If the stack jump is large, slower progression through repetitions may be more informative.

What the research can support
The 2025 cable-versus-dumbbell study provides direct longitudinal evidence for lateral-deltoid thickness and found similar results between the two conditions. A separate study in 13 resistance-trained men found greater medial-deltoid EMG in lateral raises and shoulder presses than in the bench press and dumbbell fly during that protocol.
Important limit
One training study does not establish that all cable and dumbbell setups are equivalent. The EMG study describes acute electrical activity, not recovery time or growth. Individual anatomy, execution, volume, and progression still matter.

Simple equipment with a different resistance profile across the range.
Machine lateral raise
Uses a fixed path and can simplify bilateral loading.
Leaning cable raise
Changes body position and the loaded portion of the movement.
