How to do it: adjust the seat so the upper arms rest securely on the pad, take a comfortable grip, lower through a controlled elbow-extension range, and curl without lifting the upper arms from the pad. Finish the repetition without throwing the shoulders backward.

A preacher curl is a supported elbow-flexion exercise, not a way to isolate one head of the biceps completely.

Four setup and execution cues

Fit the pad to your body

Set the seat so the upper arms stay supported without forcing the shoulders into an uncomfortable position.

Record the implement

EZ-bar, straight bar, dumbbell, machine, and cable versions have different grips and resistance profiles.

Control the lower range

Extend the elbows through a comfortable range without dropping or bouncing the resistance.

Keep the upper arm down

If the elbows lift from the pad, reduce the load or end the set before the movement changes.

Cable versus barbell preacher curls

A cable and barbell can place their largest external torque at different parts of the repetition. In a 10-week study, 35 young adults trained preacher curls three times per week for three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions. Both groups increased biceps thickness similarly. Strength improvement at the longer-muscle-length test angle was greater in the barbell group, which had more torque emphasis near elbow extension.

Specificity matters

A strength advantage at one joint angle is not the same as universal exercise superiority. Keep cable and barbell versions separate because the resistance profile, load scale, and performance history are not interchangeable.

Reps and progression

A practical 8 to 15 repetition range can balance control and progression, but it is not the only productive range. Add repetitions while keeping the pad, grip, implement, range, and optional RIR stable. Then add the smallest usable load. If the next bar or stack increment is large, build more repetitions before changing it.

What the research can support

The direct preacher-curl study supports both cable and barbell versions as trainable choices over ten weeks, with similar measured biceps-thickness changes and angle-specific differences in strength. Broader range-of-motion research suggests that training at longer muscle lengths can be relevant for some muscles, including the elbow flexors.

Important limit

The direct study used young adults, one program, and two preacher-curl resistance profiles. It does not prove that every barbell, cable, machine, grip, pad angle, or range produces the same outcome. The range-of-motion literature also includes mixed exercises and populations.
