Muscle recovery: evidence and Forma methodology.
Forma turns logged resistance training into a muscle-by-muscle recovery estimate. This note documents the public rationale and limits without publishing the proprietary model.

What published research supports
Resistance-training recovery varies with the session and the outcome measured. Small experimental studies show that sets to failure can delay recovery compared with non-failure work, high session volume can extend performance deficits, and person-to-person recovery can vary substantially.
Research also shows that functional performance and indirect markers such as soreness, swelling, range of motion, and blood measures can return on different schedules. It is therefore reasonable to represent recovery as uncertain context. It is not reasonable to claim that one timer directly observes biological recovery.

Why the model is not a 48-hour rule
A fixed interval ignores meaningful differences in volume, failure, exercise selection, novelty, and individual response. It also treats recovery as a single event even though performance and indirect markers can follow different timelines.
Forma uses a muscle-by-muscle display because training sessions distribute work across primary and supporting muscles. The display remains an estimate. Compound-exercise overlap and muscle contribution cannot be perfectly inferred from a workout log.
What remains proprietary
Implementation boundary
Forma does not publish equations, coefficients, thresholds, decay functions, recovery windows, exercise-to-muscle mappings, contribution weights, confidence scoring, recommendation rules, model code, or internal validation data. Published studies support the general rationale and limitations. They do not independently validate Forma's undisclosed implementation.
Known limitations
- A workout log cannot observe sleep quality, pain, illness, stress, technique, range of motion, or tissue response with clinical precision.
- RIR is subjective and may be misestimated.
- Exercise-to-muscle contribution varies by anatomy, setup, technique, and range of motion.
- One strong or weak session can reflect motivation, skill, equipment, or measurement noise.
- The research base often uses small samples and specific protocols, with limited representation across sex, age, and training backgrounds.
- Forma has not published an external validation showing that its recovery status measures biological recovery or predicts injury.
Health boundary
Forma is a fitness and general-wellness app. Its recovery status is not medical advice and should not be used to diagnose pain, decide whether an injury has healed, or clear a return to sport.
