The biceps brachii has two heads and crosses both the shoulder and elbow. It contributes to elbow flexion and forearm supination, while the brachialis and brachioradialis share elbow-flexion work.

Short anatomy: both biceps heads begin on the scapula and converge toward the radius and forearm fascia. The biceps helps turn the palm upward and bend the elbow. It is not the only elbow flexor, and no curl completely isolates one head.

Parts and roles

Long head

Begins at the supraglenoid region of the scapula and travels through the shoulder before joining the distal biceps.

Short head

Begins at the coracoid process of the scapula and joins the long head in the upper arm.

Other elbow flexors

The brachialis and brachioradialis contribute to elbow flexion but are anatomically separate from biceps brachii.

What training studies add

In 35 young adults, ten weeks of cable or barbell preacher curls increased biceps thickness similarly, while angle-specific strength differed. A 2025 within-participant study matched resistance profiles in preacher and Bayesian cable curls and found increases in biceps and brachialis thickness with no significant between-condition difference.

Evidence boundary

These studies tested specific exercises, resistance profiles, doses, and young-adult samples. They do not prove that shoulder position never matters, that all curl variations are equivalent, or that one exercise can isolate a single biceps head.

Weekly sets and recovery

Track direct curls separately from supporting work in rows and pulldowns. A raw set count cannot express exercise execution, range, load, RIR, or how much the biceps contributed to a compound exercise.
