Training effort

RPE 8 means about two reps in reserve.

On the resistance-training RIR-based scale, an RPE 8 set ends when you believe about two more complete repetitions were available with the intended technique.

Short answer: RPE 8 corresponds to about 2 RIR. It describes the perceived effort of a completed set. It does not mean 80% of 1RM, eight repetitions, or exactly two objectively verified repetitions remaining.

Two RPE 8 examples

Bench press

You complete eight repetitions and estimate that ten were possible. The set is about 2 RIR, or RPE 8.

Squat

You complete five repetitions and estimate that seven were possible. This can also be RPE 8 despite a different exercise and repetition count.

This is why RPE 8 is not one fixed load percentage. The rating changes with the repetition target, exercise, daily performance, and individual repetition capacity.

How to use RPE 8

Know the target

Read RPE 8 as an intended effort, not as a command to use a particular percentage.

Perform consistently

Keep range and technique comparable enough for the rating to retain meaning.

Rate the completed set

Ask whether about two more complete repetitions were available.

Review the history

Use repeated sets and sessions instead of overreacting to one subjective rating.

Accuracy boundary

The RIR anchor is subjective. A review of 12 studies found imperfect predictions overall, with accuracy generally improving closer to failure and in lower-repetition, heavier-load conditions. Familiarity can help make the language more useful, but it does not turn RPE 8 into a direct measurement.

Technique still decides when a set ends

If pain, unsafe setup, or meaningful technique breakdown occurs, stop the set. A planned RPE is not a reason to force additional repetitions.

Frequently asked questions

What does RPE 8 mean in lifting?

On the resistance-training RIR-based scale, RPE 8 means you estimate that about two additional complete repetitions were available before task failure.

Is RPE 8 the same as 80% of 1RM?

No. RPE 8 is a perceived-effort rating, while 80% of 1RM is a relative load. Different repetition counts and exercises can reach RPE 8 at different percentages of 1RM.

Can RPE 8 be inaccurate?

Yes. RPE 8 depends on an estimated 2 RIR, and people do not predict repetitions to failure perfectly. Treat the number as useful context rather than a measured fact.

Should every working set be RPE 8?

No universal RPE fits every set. The useful target depends on the exercise, goal, phase, fatigue cost, technique, safety, and the rest of the program.
