Weekly sets are useful. They are not a universal prescription.

Forma uses a multi-muscle view of training volume because compound exercises involve more than one muscle. Here is the public logic, the supporting research, and the uncertainty that remains.

Short answer: weekly hard sets are a practical way to summarize resistance-training volume, and higher volume is generally associated with greater gains up to a point. Returns diminish, supporting-muscle work matters, and the productive amount differs by person, muscle, exercise, effort, and recovery.

Direct sets and indirect work

A set of curls clearly trains the elbow flexors. A set of rows also involves them, but not in the same role as the back musculature. Counting only the exercise’s primary label throws away useful information; counting every involved muscle as a full direct set can overstate the stimulus.

Recent meta-regression work explicitly compared ways to classify direct and indirect sets. The relative evidence favored a fractional treatment of indirect work over either ignoring it or counting it in full. That supports Forma’s general multi-muscle approach. It does not establish one universal fraction for every exercise, muscle, technique, or lifter.

How to read the result

  • Use it to spot large imbalances or sudden volume changes
  • Interpret it beside performance and recovery
  • Do not chase the same number for every muscle
  • Do not treat the count as proof of effective stimulus

Forma does not publish one fixed target as the correct amount for every person, muscle, or training phase.

What remains proprietary

Forma publishes the concepts, categories, evidence, and limitations. Forma does not publish its exercise-to-muscle mapping, contribution weights, coefficients, set-qualification rules, thresholds, rolling windows, confidence scoring, recommendation rules, or source code. Forma also does not assume that every indirect set has one fixed value.

The cited research supports the public rationale; it does not reveal or independently validate Forma’s proprietary implementation.

What the evidence supports

Weekly set volume and muscle growth meta-analysis (2017)

Reported a graded relationship between weekly resistance-training volume and hypertrophy across the included literature. It supports volume as a useful variable, not a guaranteed result from any specific set count.

Volume and frequency dose-response meta-regressions (2026)

Found that gains tend to increase with weekly volume while showing diminishing returns, and formally examined fractional counting of indirect work. This is the closest published support for Forma’s public counting rationale.

Weekly sets for trained men systematic review (2022)

Suggested 12–20 sets per muscle per week as a practical standard recommendation for the population and outcomes reviewed. The authors’ population limits are important: it is not a universal target for all people or muscles.

Limits and responsible interpretation

Set counting does not fully capture effort, range of motion, technique, exercise selection, long-muscle-length loading, recovery, or individual response. A high count of low-effort work is not automatically equivalent to fewer challenging sets. Logging accuracy and exercise naming also affect the result.

Volume should be adjusted using performance, soreness, recovery, goals, and training experience. Forma’s display is not medical advice and is not a substitute for individualized coaching or rehabilitation guidance.
