How many sets per muscle per week?

Weekly sets are a useful summary of resistance-training volume. They are not a universal dose, and a useful count must distinguish challenging direct work from warm-ups and supporting-muscle work.

Short answer: there is no universally optimal weekly set count. Research generally finds greater hypertrophy with more weekly sets up to a point, followed by diminishing returns. A 2022 review proposed 12 to 20 weekly sets as a practical standard for trained young men, but that range is specific to the evidence reviewed and is not a rule for every lifter or muscle.

A 2017 meta-analysis reported a graded relationship between weekly resistance-training volume and muscle growth across the included studies.

Returns diminish

A 2026 meta-regression found that gains tended to increase with weekly volume while the added return from each additional set became smaller.

Training status, muscle group, exercise selection, effort, recovery, program design, and individual response make one fixed target inappropriate.

The research supports monitoring and adjusting volume. It does not establish a precise number that guarantees growth.

Recent meta-regression work formally compared direct, full, and fractional ways of counting indirect sets. Fractional counting fit the analyzed evidence better than either ignoring indirect work or counting it fully. That result supports treating indirect work as meaningful, but it does not prove one universal fraction for every exercise and muscle.

A responsible way to adjust weekly volume

Establish the record

Track the sets you actually complete for each muscle across several weeks.

Check performance

Review whether load, repetitions, technique, and estimated effort are stable or improving.

Check recovery

Look for persistent soreness, declining performance, pain, poor sleep, and fatigue before adding work.

Change gradually

Adjust a small amount, keep other variables reasonably stable, and review the response.

This process treats volume as a variable to test against your response. It avoids turning a population average into an individual prescription.

Why a set count is not the whole stimulus

Two programs can report the same weekly set total while differing in effort, range of motion, exercise selection, technique, load, repetition range, rest periods, and progression. Counting is valuable because it compresses the training record into a usable view. The compression also removes information, so interpret the count beside performance and recovery.
