Carbohydrate evidence needs context
A 2022 systematic review found carbohydrate intake alone was unlikely to improve strength-training performance in a fed state for sessions up to 10 sets per muscle group, while some higher-volume or glycogen-depleted conditions could differ. A 2026 meta-analysis found no significant independent hypertrophy benefit from higher carbohydrate intake, but rated the certainty low.
Neither finding means carbohydrate is unnecessary. It means the evidence does not support presenting one high-carbohydrate target as a direct hypertrophy switch.
