TDEE is daily energy use, not a fixed calorie number.

Total daily energy expenditure combines resting needs, digestion, movement, and exercise. A calculator can estimate that total, but it does not measure a permanent metabolic setting.

Short answer: TDEE is the total energy your body uses across a day. It includes resting metabolism, the thermic effect of food, non-exercise movement, and planned exercise. The components and their measurement error mean that one calculated number should be treated as a starting estimate.

The four-part model

This breakdown is useful conceptually. A normal consumer log does not directly isolate each component.

BMR, RMR, and TDEE answer different questions

BMR

Basal metabolic rate is measured under tightly controlled basal conditions. It is not the full amount used during ordinary life.

RMR

Resting metabolic rate is a resting-energy measure obtained under less restrictive conditions than BMR. Predictive equations estimate it from population data.

TDEE

Total daily energy expenditure adds food processing and activity to resting expenditure. It changes as the person and daily behavior change.

An activity category scales the estimate toward a daily total.

What does TDEE mean?

Does TDEE stay the same every day?

Can an app measure TDEE exactly?

No consumer app directly measures exact TDEE from normal logs. Apps and calculators estimate it from equations or repeated intake and bodyweight observations, each with uncertainty.
