What the resistance-training evidence says
A 2022 meta-analysis and meta-regression compared resistance training performed with and without an energy deficit. Lean-mass gains were impaired on average in the deficit conditions, while strength outcomes were not statistically different in the main comparison. Its regression found that a deficit near 500 kcal per day prevented lean-mass gains on average in the included data.
Do not turn the regression into a law
The estimate describes an average relationship across included studies. It does not prove that 499 kcal is safe for everyone or that 501 kcal prevents progress in every lifter. Study populations, deficit estimates, training, protein intake, body composition, and measurement methods varied.

What is a calorie deficit?
A calorie deficit occurs when average energy intake is below average energy expenditure across a period. Neither side is measured perfectly by a normal food and activity log.
What calorie deficit should a lifter use?
There is no universal deficit for every lifter. Starting body composition, training age, goal, time frame, performance, health, adherence, and observed weight trend all affect the decision.
Does a calorie deficit prevent muscle gain?
Not in every person or situation, but meta-analytic evidence indicates that prolonged energy deficits impair lean-mass gains from resistance training on average compared with training without a deficit.
Is a 500-calorie deficit always safe or optimal?
No. A meta-regression reported an average relationship near that value for lean-mass gains, but it is not a universal medical threshold or a personalized prescription.
