How to read the comparison

More load

A heavier load can be progression when repetitions, effort, technique, equipment, and range of motion remain comparable.

More repetitions

More repetitions at the same load can be progression. Randomized trials have found repetition progression and load progression both viable.

More set volume load

Load multiplied by reps summarizes one external-work dimension. It does not measure muscle tension, technique quality, fatigue, or hypertrophy.

Why there is no overall score

A heavier set with fewer repetitions, a higher-volume set taken closer to failure, or a set performed with changed technique cannot be resolved responsibly by one generic score. Review each change and ask whether the sessions were comparable. Forma’s in-app progression signal can organize more history, but its proprietary logic is not reproduced here.

How does the progressive overload calculator work?

It compares the load, repetitions, load multiplied by repetitions, and reported RIR of two sets. It shows each change separately instead of producing one overall progress score.

Does a higher set volume prove progress?

No. Load multiplied by repetitions is simple external work arithmetic. Technique, range of motion, equipment, exercise order, rest, and proximity to failure can change what the comparison means.

Can adding repetitions count as progressive overload?

Yes. Trials in trained and previously untrained adults found that load progression and repetition progression were both viable during the studied training periods.

Does this tool use Forma’s proprietary progression model?
