Double progression uses two variables in sequence. Build repetitions within a planned range, increase the load after the program’s completion rule is met, then begin again nearer the lower end.

A worked double-progression example
Suppose a program defines 3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions at approximately 2 RIR. The rule is to increase load after all three sets reach 10 repetitions at the intended effort and execution standard.

The lifter knows whether the current goal is another repetition or a load increase.
It works with fixed equipment
When the smallest available increment is large, repetition progression can bridge the gap.
It keeps performance visible
The log shows how the load increase was earned instead of recording only isolated PRs.
What must remain comparable
Exercise variation, equipment, range of motion, technique, rest, exercise order, and intended effort all affect interpretation. Reaching the top of a rep range by shortening range of motion or moving much closer to failure is not the same progression as reaching it under the original standard.
Define the completion rule before the session
A rule might use all work sets, a top set, or an average. The important part is consistency. Changing the rule after seeing the workout makes the trend harder to interpret.
What the research supports
Double progression is a practical programming convention, not a uniquely validated biological law. Its two ingredients have direct evidence. An eight-week randomized study in 43 resistance-trained adults compared increasing load with increasing repetitions and found both approaches viable. A ten-week within-subject trial in 39 previously untrained young adults also reported gains with both approaches and no between-protocol difference in the studied outcomes.
These studies do not establish one best repetition range, load increment, or completion rule for every exercise and lifter.
