Progress is easier to interpret when the underlying sets remain visible. Compare similar sessions across load, repetitions, sets, effort, and estimated strength instead of reducing everything to one personal record.

What progressive overload means
Progressive overload is the planned increase of training demands over time as the body adapts. In resistance training, it does not require adding weight every workout. Research comparing load progression with repetition progression found both approaches viable for increasing strength and muscle size during the study periods.
Overload is the training demand
Load, repetitions, sets, frequency, rest, and exercise difficulty can change the demand. A change should match the program goal rather than happen randomly.
Progress is the observed response
Improved performance can suggest adaptation, but a log does not directly measure muscle growth, tissue recovery, or readiness.

A simple double-progression example
Suppose a program uses a target of 8 to 10 repetitions at approximately 2 RIR for a comparable working set. The lifter first adds repetitions within the range, then adds a small amount of load and returns to the lower end.

This is an illustration, not a universal prescription. Real progression is often slower and less linear. The appropriate increment depends on the exercise, equipment, training age, and program.

Define comparable work
Use the same exercise variation, setup, range of motion, and intended technique.
Record the inputs
Log working sets, load, repetitions, and optional RIR immediately.
Compare a pattern
Review several similar sessions, not only the best set ever recorded.
Make one useful change
Add load, repetitions, or planned volume when the program and recent response support it.
What can make two sets incomparable?
Different equipment, shortened range of motion, changed technique, altered exercise order, assistance from a spotter, pain, sleep loss, illness, or a large shift in reported effort can all change performance. Do not reward a higher number if the movement no longer matches the intended standard.
When should you hold instead of progress?
A flat week does not automatically mean failure. Hold the current target when technique is unstable, RIR is below plan, recovery is poor, pain appears, or recent performance is inconsistent. Declining performance can be a reason to review fatigue, exercise selection, nutrition, sleep, stress, or program design.
A training log supports the decision. It cannot diagnose injury or determine readiness with certainty.
