Progressive overload is more than adding weight.

A practical, evidence-linked explanation of what progressive overload means, how Forma turns workout logs into a useful signal, and what that signal cannot prove.

Short answer: progressive overload means increasing an appropriate training demand over time. Load is one route, but completing more repetitions with the same load can also represent progression. Forma compares logged performance across sessions and reports a trend; it does not treat one personal record as proof of muscle growth.

What Forma means by progressive overload

For resistance training to keep producing adaptation, the training stimulus generally has to progress as the lifter adapts. The American College of Sports Medicine describes planned progression across training variables and gives load-progression guidance in the context of the lifter’s goal, capacity, and training status.

Progress does not have to mean adding plates every workout. In an eight-week randomized trial of trained participants, progressing repetitions and progressing load both produced strength and muscle adaptations. That is why a useful training log should recognize more than a heavier top set.

The public methodology

Forma’s labels are decision support for training review. They are not direct measurements of hypertrophy, fatigue, or readiness.

What remains proprietary

Forma publishes the purpose of the signal, its input and output categories, its scientific rationale, and its limitations. Forma does not publish its equations, coefficients, thresholds, comparison windows, confidence scoring, exercise-specific rules, recommendation rules, or source code. Those details are the proprietary model.

This boundary lets the method be examined and cited without making claims that depend on undisclosed internals.

What the evidence supports

ACSM progression models position stand (2009)

Supports progressive resistance-training protocols and describes progression across load, volume, rest, frequency, and other program variables. Its specific loading suggestions are guidance, not a universal rule for every lifter.

Load versus repetition progression trial (2022)

Found that adding load and adding repetitions were both viable ways to progress resistance training during the study period. This supports Forma’s choice not to reduce overload to load alone.

Proximity-to-failure meta-regression (2024)

Shows why the apparent difficulty of a set can matter when interpreting hypertrophy-oriented training. It does not justify treating a self-reported effort value as a laboratory measurement.

Limits and responsible interpretation

A log cannot observe technique, range of motion, equipment differences, pain, sleep, stress, or whether two efforts were truly comparable. Estimated one-repetition maximum values are mathematical estimates. Short-term performance can also move because of skill, motivation, fatigue, or body mass rather than new muscle tissue.

Use the signal as one piece of a longer training record. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, injury guidance, or an instruction to add load regardless of form and recovery.
