Progressive overload for hypertrophy is more than adding weight.

Short answer: for hypertrophy, progressive overload means developing the training demand as capacity changes. Load and repetition progression can both work. A useful log preserves the exercise, sets, repetitions, load, optional RIR, technique standard, and weekly muscle volume instead of demanding a PR every workout.

What two progression trials found

Resistance-trained adults

Plotkin and colleagues randomized 43 trained adults to load progression or repetition progression for eight weeks. Both approaches appeared viable, with no notable differences across most outcomes and only small, uncertain differences in specific measures.

Previously untrained adults

Chaves and colleagues used a ten-week within-subject design in 39 young adults. Both load and repetition progression increased leg-extension strength and vastus lateralis cross-sectional area, with no between-protocol difference.

These studies support flexibility between the two progression routes. They do not show that every template, exercise, or population responds identically.

Progression does not require failure

A 2022 systematic review found no evidence that momentary muscular failure was superior to non-failure training for hypertrophy. A 2024 meta-regression suggested a relationship between training closer to failure and hypertrophy, but the RIR values were estimated from study descriptions and the analysis does not establish one exact target for every set.

Do not chase progression by changing the exercise standard

More repetitions with shortened range of motion, greater assistance, changed equipment, or substantially lower RIR are not directly comparable with the original set. A performance number is useful only when the underlying work remains visible.

Weekly volume belongs in the review
