Working sets, repetitions, and load multiplied by repetitions all describe training work differently. A useful log names the measure and keeps effort, exercise, technique, and muscle involvement in view.

What current evidence supports
Volume is relevant
A 2026 meta-regression of 67 studies and 2,058 participants found positive volume slopes for strength and hypertrophy across the analyzed evidence.
Returns diminish
The same analysis found diminishing returns, more pronounced for strength. This is not evidence that endless additional sets keep producing equal benefit.
Context changes the count
Direct and indirect work, training status, exercise choice, effort, technique, and recoverability change how a weekly total should be interpreted.
A 2026 ACSM overview of 137 systematic reviews also found that higher weekly volumes enhanced hypertrophy on average. Its category-level finding does not create an exact personal target or guarantee.
Volume is a record, not a biological measurement
Two sets can carry the same volume load while using different loads, repetition counts, ranges of motion, velocities, and proximity to failure. Two exercises can contain the same set count while involving a target muscle differently. Volume measures help organize training, but they do not directly observe what happened inside a muscle.

Keep the target clear
Separate exercise totals from muscle totals and direct work from supporting work.
Preserve context
Review load, repetitions, RIR, execution, range of motion, and exercise setup.

What is training volume?
Training volume is a broad description of how much resistance-training work is performed. It can be represented by working sets, repetitions, volume load, or other measures, but those measures are not interchangeable.
How do you calculate training volume?
One common calculation is volume load: sum the load multiplied by completed repetitions for each set. Weekly working-set counts are another useful measure. Neither calculation directly measures the stimulus received by a muscle.
Are more sets always better?
No. Current meta-regression evidence suggests gains tend to rise with weekly set volume while showing diminishing returns. Additional sets also add fatigue, time, and recovery demand.
