A weekly set count compresses training into a practical muscle-level total. Volume load preserves load and repetitions. Neither is a universal proxy for stimulus or growth.

The second example has greater volume load than the first, but the calculation alone does not establish greater muscle stimulus. Load, repetition range, proximity to failure, exercise, technique, and range of motion differ.

What research methodology tells us
A 2021 review explained that sets, repetitions, and volume load are used to equate resistance-training programs, but not every metric is appropriate for every comparison. A 2023 network meta-analysis separated prescriptions by load, sets, and frequency rather than treating them as one interchangeable volume number.
The 2026 weekly dose-response analysis used sets because its question concerned weekly volume and frequency. It also classified sets as direct or indirect to the measured outcome. That method cannot be replaced by one session’s volume-load total.
Do not compare unlike exercises with raw volume load
A leg press may use a much larger external load than a knee extension, and a machine’s recorded stack value may not represent the same resistance at the target muscle. A higher number across different movements can reflect equipment and mechanics rather than a larger useful dose.

What is the difference between weekly sets and volume load?
Weekly sets count qualifying working sets over a week. Volume load sums load multiplied by completed repetitions. Set counts are simple for muscle-level planning, while volume load preserves more external-work detail.
Is volume load better than counting sets?
Not universally. The more useful metric depends on the question. Volume load can be distorted across exercises and repetition ranges, while a set count removes load, repetition, and effort information.
Can the same number of sets produce different volume load?
Yes. Three sets of five at 100 kilograms produce 1,500 kilogram-repetitions, while three sets of ten at 60 kilograms produce 1,800. That does not prove the second session created more hypertrophy.
Does either metric measure mechanical tension?
No. Both are external training summaries. They do not directly measure force at individual muscle fibers, motor-unit recruitment, technique, fatigue, or hypertrophy.
