Why the estimate should adapt
Bodyweight change is dynamic. Energy expenditure can change with body size, activity, intake, and physiological adaptation, while daily scale weight also moves because of water, glycogen, sodium, and digestive contents. A single day of intake and weight cannot resolve those effects.
Published dynamic models show that repeated bodyweight observations can be used with energy-balance principles to estimate longer-term changes. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases uses this line of research in its Body Weight Planner and publishes the underlying scientific context.
The public methodology

TDEE means total daily energy expenditure. It combines resting needs, food-related energy expenditure, exercise, and non-exercise activity.
What remains proprietary
Forma publishes the input and output categories, the scientific rationale, and the main limitations. Forma does not publish its equations, coefficients, priors, smoothing windows, outlier rules, confidence thresholds, projection logic, recommendation rules, or source code.
The cited studies validate their own published methods, not Forma’s proprietary implementation. Forma has not published an external validation against doubly labeled water. It should not be described as a direct or clinically validated measurement of metabolism.
What the evidence supports
Quantified the dynamic relationship between energy imbalance and bodyweight change, including the slow time course and changing energy requirements that static calorie rules can miss.
Compared a method using repeated bodyweight and initial demographic information with doubly labeled water and body-composition measurements in 140 people over two years. Mean changes were within 40 kcal per day, while the reported individual root-mean-square deviation was 215 kcal per day.
Provides an official explanation of the dynamic modeling research and appropriate adult-use limits. It is an external scientific reference, not documentation of Forma’s internal implementation.
Limits and responsible interpretation
Food logging can miss ingredients, portions, drinks, and cooking oils. Scale weight can be distorted for days by hydration, menstrual-cycle changes, glycogen, sodium, illness, and travel. Sparse weigh-ins and inconsistent intake logging widen uncertainty. Pregnancy, growth, eating disorders, medication changes, or medical conditions require qualified clinical guidance.
